A Call to Action: Regulate Use of Cell Phones on the Road
When a cell phone goes off in a classroom or at a concert, we are irritated, but at least our lives are not endangered. When we are on the road, however, irresponsible cell phone users are more than irritating: They are putting our lives at risk. This sample essay explores the problem in depth and suggests some solutions.
Every day, at least twenty-eight people in the United States are killed or injured in crashes that are reported to have involved a distracted driver (“Distracted Driving”). Most of the distractions are caused by cell phone use. Cell phone companies and service providers are partly to blame for the problem because they continue to market new, advanced phones and services that encourage customers to be constantly connected and to use their phones more frequently.
In addition to the cell phone companies, the government is also at fault. It has not taken strong enough measures to regulate cell phone use while driving. Some states have banned the use of cell phones while driving, but these bans are difficult to enforce and have not proven to be very effective. Furthermore, the federal government has not passed any legislation that would make cell phone use while driving illegal.
In order to address the problem of cell phone use while driving, we must first recognize that it is a serious and dangerous problem. We must then work together to find solutions. Cell phone companies should be required to design phones and services that are less distracting and more user-friendly while driving. They should also be required to provide more information to consumers about the dangers of cell phone use while driving. The government should also take a more active role in regulating cell phone use while driving. It should pass laws that make it illegal to use a cell phone while driving, and it should enforce these laws more strictly.
In conclusion, cell phone use while driving is a serious and dangerous problem. It is time for us to take action and regulate the use of cell phones on the road. By working together, we can make our roads safer and prevent tragedies caused by distracted drivers.
